Open letter to SUN to produce a JRE for Pocket PC
Jun 5, 2003 8:53 AM

To any SUN Employee dealing with Personal Java.
We realise you are currently under resourced in the development of J2ME but we implore you to release a commercially viable JRE for ARM Pocket PC - even just that age old Personal Java 2001 variant in a finalized commerical build.
We cannot use your Personal Java beta implementation in a commericial environment (so says your license) and the it is serverely stunting the growth of Java in this area.
Due to lack of adequate Java support for ARM Pocket PC a large number of developers are losing faith in this technology on this platform and moving to rival technologies. Do you really want this to happen and for an already monopolistic rival to get a good foot hold in an area in which Java should flurish?

**
Anybody who reads this and feels as strongly about the lack of JRE please sign this and add a comment - maybe we can get the SUN to sit up and take notice.

Same here (www.simeda.com), we switched to .NET Compact Framework. We just didn't find anything suitable in the Java world.

What's the REAL reason there's no SUN JVM (i.e. J2ME) on PocketPC?
I also had to succumb to .NET for an enterprise project.
Hey! I'm a stockholder!

My company will have to turn to Microsoft .NET too because of a lack of free J2ME JRE - hence why I made the initial post.
I'm trying to get Java developers from Slashdot to sign this thing too, hopefully they'll paste an article in their news soon?!

This is entirely true. Insignias Jeode is wholely inadequaten for PocketPC development. It is designed for the older CE hand helds. Also from what it says on their website it looks like they are having financial troubles. I doubt we will see a new version made to run for PocketPCs. If Sun has an experimental VM for the Zaurus why can't they make one for the PocketPC platform. After all they have similar hardware just a different OS. I think it would be great if there was a Java 2D wrapper around the GAPI. I know for certain that I would use it.

FYI: I believe Insignia has sold all of their JVM products including Jeode to esmertec - http://www.esmertec.com/

Count me in as wanting a solid JVM for this platform.

Working for the Municipality of Anchorage, I also am sitting on the edge. The port of Anchorage may be using handheld CE devices, and I need a workable Java platform for the device, or I'll be forced to use .NET.

Well its on Slashdot now and in a newsgroup. If anyone has suggestions how we can get the attention of the people that make the decisions please tell me!
This is an email I sent to the personaljava support email (personaljava-comments@java.sun.com):

Please see this post - its going to get bigger now this article is on it (Slashdot):
http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/09/1158232

The forum itself:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=56&thread=408223

Its also in comp.lang.java.programmer
Slashdot and a new JRE for PocketPC

We need a free finalised J2ME or PersonalJava JRE for PocketPC - Microsoft has the ability to runaway on an expanding market with no competition - posts here should prove that developers are already moving in droves to .NET. Isn't this Java's forte, mobile devices?

If you have any sway with the higher ups in Sun who can dedicate resources (or indeed yourself) please pass on this email. This is one market where Java really should get a good hold - inheriting by design.

Thank you,

Benjamin (brownb2, Ben)

10 Duke dollars are available to anyone who can get the attention of the powers that be for this cause, or failing that can provide information as to how I can contact them (and I must get a authentic response).

Thanks.

I would like to express my support for this open letter. Sun, you are not ones to allow Microsoft to blindly rule an emerging market... Please provide a JVM for (ARM) CE devices that can be used in a commercial environment...

Thanks,
Tal Rotbart

I agree with brownb2. A (preferably free) Java VM for the Pocket PC is a must.
