I recently purchased a low end Sun Ultra 40 to use as my home backup and media server for my family. I must say, I was very impressed with the design, but I have one problem: I can't use any of the SATA 1Tb Hard disks I ordered due to their lack of brackets.
Apparently what I need is a 540-6562 spud hdd bracket: http://mxsun.stores.yahoo.net/5406562.html
Unfortunately, these are $70.00 each, making the storage media almost as expensive as it would be if I purchased it from Sun ;-)
What I'm wondering is, would the much cheaper 540-3024 work ( http://www.memoryx.net/5403024.html )? I'm guessing not since the lists of supported systems are disjoint.
I (now) realize using non-Sun hard disk media isn't supported, but I've already purchased the drives (this is my first time as a Sun customer), so I need to do something with them. As a last resort I will be building my own brackets, but I would really prefer not to do this.
you could take a chance and buy the original spud bracket off Ebay... I haven't seen the "new" spud bracket for the new Suns, but the pictures look almost exactly like the "old" ones... the old ones go for $5 each...
or you could just go external storage... since Sun only sells the bracket attached to hard drives...
Yeah, I thought they looked pretty similar too - my plan is to buy one and try it, so I'll post back here when I find out how well it works. Of course, if someone has already tried, please let me know.
I have an Ultra 24 workstation and have several SATA drives that I want to add to it. I see plenty of SPUD rails on ebay, but lots of different model numbers.
Are they all interchangeable? They all sure look the same.
I bought my brackets on eBay, the model number is 540-6562.
Specs indicate that they are compatible with the Sun Fire line of servers, but don't specifically call out the Ultra 24. I can verify that it does work with my SATA drives in my Ultra 24 workstation.
