Bug - Solaris snv_91 - Under VMware WS 6.0 - "WARNING: Time-of-day chip..."
Jul 2, 2008 11:42 AM

I downloaded "Solaris Express Community Edition" snv_91 from http://www.opensolaris.org/os/downloads/ and
have installed it under VMware WS 6.0.4 .

Previously I have tried OpenSolaris 2008.05 and Solaris 10 u3 without any trouble with the TOD chip.

When I boot SECE snv_91 (my understanding is that this is "OpenSolaris 2008.05 plus typing "pkg image-update" ...) I get an error that did not occur with either OS2008.05 or S10u3 as follows:

WARNING: Time-of-day chip unresponsive; dead batteries?

VMware emulates the TOD chip so there must be a difference in the drivers used in previous snv's and the most recent version. This is annoying since newly created files are dated "Dec 27 1986" -- this includes files created at boot time (E.G.: /cdrom , /dev , /devices , etc.).

I did goto [Start Button][Administration][Time and Date] and checked "Periodically synchronize clock with Internet servers" and set a working server - but that does not seem to update the clock either :( .

I do have Internet connectivity since I am typing this in a browser window on Firefox.

Each time I boot I have to go the [Time and Date] and set it manually - that works well and keeps time correctly.

Suggestions ? - or when will this bug be fixed ...

Thanks for any replies,
Rob

I edited "/etc/inet/ntp.conf" (which was zero bytes long) and wrote the correct info.

Then I restarted the service with:
svcadm restart svc:/network/ntp:default

It looks like it works, but will it work after rebooting; here goes ...

I had the same problem with VMWare Player 2.0.4 (different builds)
and with snv_91, snv_93, snv_95

Problem was gone when I removed file sol10.nvram.
This file is recreated when VMWare Player restarts.
So make a copy of this file and delete it.
Exact file name you can find in *.vmx file in the line
nvram = "sol10.nvram"
