Why choose Sun (7310)
Nov 5, 2009 2:37 AM

Hi,

To the persons on this list who are using a 7310 (or comparable) storage cluster,
why did you go for this system and not for something like Compellent or Lefthand etc.?

I'm in the process of comparing these systems and was wondering what made you decide
to go for the Sun solution.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Patrick.

I don't know Compellent, but Lefthand is a pure blockbased SAN while 7x10 is a NAS with a lot more features.

We chose a NAS to consolidate our Windows fileservices (CIFS) which 7x10 does very efficient, and because we decided to move our vSphere storage to NFS for various reasons.

In our decision process the real battle was between Netapp and Sun, but with Netapp software feature licenses are very costly. For Sun it's free.

And I really like the monitoring tools of 7x10, they are world class! :-)

Thanks for the replies.
Can you tell me if the system will do bonding of the gigE interfaces (to
avoid having to use 10G for now) ?
(I could ask a sales rep but rather hear it from an independent person using
it)

Best regards,
Patrick.

yes, my 7110 does LACP link aggregation very nicely - in fact, I threw a quad-gigE PCI-e card in the box and aggregated that with no problems.
Your switch must support it, and be configured to do so on the exact ports you are patching in to.

Heres a snapshot of my network configuration screen:
