I'm trying to run the java plugin from jdk1_5_0 on Solaris 9. I've got 2 different browsers installed, Netscape 7.0 from sun.com and Firefox 1.0 from the mozilla.org solaris build. Neither one works with the libjavaplugin_oji.so packaged with jdk1_5_0! I'm linking to /usr/jdk/jdk1.5.0/jre/plugin/sparc/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so from firefox/plugins and from netscape/plugins and can't get either to work. Firefox works but gives a segmentation fault on exit. And Netscape just hangs when you go to a page with any applets on it, and has to be killed. I've had to install j2sdk1.4.2 alongside 1.5 so I could use the plugin from that, which works with both Netscape and Firefox just fine.

Did you set the Java 5 Control Panel to use the Java
plug-in for those browsers?
The only place I see in ControlPanel where a browser is mentioned is in the Advanced tab under "Command to launch default browser". I set that to firefox and it makes no difference.

Interesting - my setup is different, I'm on XP Pro. The Java Control Panel, Advanced tab, has a tree entry "<APPLET tag support>" that expands to two checkbox entries, "Internet Explorer" and "Mozilla and Netscape".
The documentation for the Java 5 Plug-in covers the new version of the Control Panel, you might want to check it.

From various documentation I believe that making a symlink in firefox/plugins or netscape/plugins to libjavaplugin_oji.so is a valid way to configure netscape or firefox to use that java plugin. The fact that both netscape and firefox are working without problems with the 1.4.2 version of the java plugin for solaris and both have problems with the 1.5.0 version of the java plugin for solaris leads me to believe that the 1.5.0 plugin for solaris is broken in some way.

I get the same message - I don't have those browsers installed.
Apparently you don't either, or the installation is defective.

I installed the Solaris self-extracting binary installation (jdk-1_5_0-sparc.sh) instead of the Solaris package install and the plugin works fine now. Apparently the issue is present only in the Solaris package installl.

Hi,
I copied the NPOJI610.dll into C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins and it worked even though the Java Control Panel give a "Unable to change browser settings" error message.
Yeah I have run into the same problem. I am running Mozilla 1.7.3 on Solaris 8.
Everything works fine but once I link to the Java 1.5 lib I get the following error when I launch mozilla from the command line:
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not get the plugin manager
System error?:: Error 0
Just wanted to see if anyone else had a message like this or if there is a way to fix this specific problem. This copy of mozilla was built by hand using gcc 3.0.4 and the following configure command

Problem: With the new FireFox 1.0 browser on Windows NT SP6a, if you install Java 5, the installation script asks you if you want to install the plugin into Mozilla / Netscape. It doesn't ask about FireFox. Java 5 JRE installs without problems.
I have Java 1.3.1 which is a recommened version for FireFox. And FireFox will use it just fine.
But if you install Java 5 JRE, it overrides the use of the Java 1.3.1 plugin.
Even if you uncheck the Mozilla / Netscape box during the install, FireFox will still use the Java 5 plugin. The real problem is that FireFox is only compatible with Java 1.3.1 plugin.
So it's a problem to install Java 5 and run FireFox for applets. So who do I report this too???
I probably didn't explain this clearly. Any questions???

I noticed everyone talking about jre java 1.5. I'm currently using jre 1.4.2_06 and having a lot of problems using it in cases ladder www.iwin.com pool games. It constantly dc's you. I also heard there that it is a problem with some, ok with others. Where is this verson 1.5 located?
I use Windows XP Pro and IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp2.rtm
Also in IE\tools\IE options\advanced tab scroll down to Java sun is now unchecked and below it is Microsoft VM with 3 checkboxes all checked. I used different setups on this, changing them around and it stands as is at this moment. Been disconnected only a couple times.
any help with this
Thank you

I have Firefox 1.0 installed on my Win2K SP3 box. The easy way to install Java 5 is to go to a URL that has an applet. Firefox will put up a "Get the Plugin" notice and a Get Plugin button. Just click the button. Everything is automatic. And Java 5 seems to work flawlessly with Firefox on Win2K. It installs and runs with IE 6 also.
This method of installation is so simple. And it works so well that it's almost like having Java 5 installed by the box maker. Firefox has negated all the efforts Microsoft have made to kill Java.
I suspect that the problems people are having is that the Java 5 JRE was installed before Firefox and therefore was not properly installed into Firefox . Try uninstalling the JRE and let Firefox manage the installation.
